It’s one of the most popular food and drink chains in the UK but each Wetherspoon pub has its own distinct features and traits.

Since the first one was opened in 1979 by Exeter-based founder and chairman Tim Martin, the brand has grown into a massive national pub chain with more than 900 locations across the country.

So you never have to walk far to find the familiar menu and cheap booze, but just how good are the Wetherspoon pubs in Devon?

There are many ‘Spoons in the area and while you might assume they’re all the same, the reviews on TripAdvisor paint a very different picture.

Here’s what people love – and hate – about every Wetherspoon pub in Devon, according to TripAdvisor reviewers. How many have you visited? Which one is your favourite?

It’s excellent…

Travelling_Phil_W: ‘What’s not to like? Popped in for a coffee this time but have had pizza, curry, chilli etc on previous visits and never been disappointed.’

Reg N: ‘It’s great how Wetherspoons convert old unused buildings like this into something so worthwhile. Typical, tasty basic grub of great value, and good standard and a Real Ale that would shame many pubs in the city.’

RichardsR5672JV: ‘Great value food served in comfortable surroundings. Service was very quick too, both for drinks and for food! Spot on.’

It’s terrible…

Mimimia98: ‘Every time I go in this place I end up regretting going in there. The food isn’t too bad apart from the chips (awful). Never did feel any sort of customer service and this place attracts a lot of arrogant “lads” who always annoy me so much I just want to leave.’

Tartyauntie: ‘Some of our party had to send food back, staff serving tables were very rude and abrupt. We were given cutlery that looked like had just come off another plate – too much food was left on them for them to have been washed.’

Mark G: ‘The tables were all dirty and when we got to the bar to order we were told a one hour wait. Don’t bother going.’

Simon F: ‘This Wetherspoons was really nice and clean – good prompt service and very popular. Nice location by the sea and not far from the town centre it turned out to be our saviour for somewhere to eat in a very quiet out-of-season Ilfracombe.’

13edb: ‘Very pleasantly surprised at the quality of food, speed of service and generally excellent state of the pub. Staff regularly interacted with us to ensure we were happy with everything. Also, prices were very reasonable.’

Paul C: ‘Quality beers, very good food and friendly staff. Wetherspoons at its best – well done. Will deffo go back.’

It’s terrible…

Joannekent: ‘This pub is not dog friendly, inside or outside. We sat outside with a small dog and got told we can not stay. Dog lovers do not go.’

Gayle C: ‘Meal looked disgusting and onion rings severely burnt. My lunch was very overcooked and only just warm – children’s lunch was terrible, everything looked as though it had been warmed up several times. Shame on you Spoons.’

Jack C: ‘Due to the openness of the outside rooftop, a bird was allowed to excrete onto my family’s table and into my drink and onto my food. Never been so disgusted at a restaurant in my life.’

Pacebos: ‘Always like to come here for pre-match drinks on a Saturday. Lively atmosphere, good table service and very friendly staff. Thoroughly recommended.’

Suzicav: ‘Fantastic service. I’d definitely go back. They have a great range of drinks and the parma violet gin is definitely a winner.’

It’s terrible…

Lovehomemadegrub: ‘Food was shocking. Bouncers rude, expecting people to sit on the same table as you when you’re eating. Some nice staff but overall shambles. Gutted I could give them a zero.’

Glynn R: ‘Had to wait so long and all our meals were cold. Disappointed with the poor standard. Its not the first time this has happened at this venue. Will not be revisited.’

Chae D: ‘Had a meal, table next to me covered with dirty plates, coffee cups tissues etc. After my meal (forty minutes duration) two young chaps sat down at the dirty table, got served their meal and the waitress walked off without clearing the table. Absolutely gross.’

Pross100: ‘I can only say that everything was excellent, including the drinks. Superb meal and at a great price. There was minimal wait and the staff were lovely.’

ARKAYESS: ‘Very busy downstairs so we went up to the roof-top bar. Wow, fantastic area, views over Exeter, great weather, great crowd of people in. Called in for one drink, stayed for three. One of Wetherspoon’s better bars, friendly service. Recommend this bar to all.’

It’s terrible…

RObbo60_11: ‘Just such atrocious service, bar staff are much more interested in chatting to one another than serving customers. I’ve lost count of the number of Wetherspoons I have been in but this is by far the worst.’

Ross I: ‘Our table leg was broken which resulted in our drinks flying off the table and covering my partner’s legs.’

Paul G: ‘Notwithstanding a £2m makeover, the downstairs men’s toilets continue to be a disgrace. Not to put a fine point on it – the stench is dreadful.’

Mags008: ‘Another well-run pub in the Wetherspoon chain. Top service at the bar, great prices and great food. This is an extremely busy bar but the service is top rate. The Green Ginger is in a superb location, near the harbour and shops, and is well worth a visit.’

Reg N: ‘This is really excellent and one of the best Spoons I have been in. Buzzing, friendly and nice basic but tasty snack, and the usual standard real ale. No wonder this chain is booming.’

Elliottharris: ‘This pub is undoubtedly the best pub in Exeter – nay, the world. Its sheer grace and magnitude makes my jaw drop every visit. The service is second to none, and scenery truly unique. I wouldn’t change anything, this pub has a very special place in my heart.’

It’s terrible…

TonyfromExeter: ‘Had the full English breakfast plonked on my table. The toast was black, the fried eggs were cold and overcooked – hard as rubber. No one came and asked if everything was ok with the food. Extremely poor.’

VicandNic: ‘This is a grand place but totally wrecked by loud, drunken louts in search of cheap beer. The evening is not one I would ever repeat. We had to wait over 40 minutes before we could find a place to sit. The noise level is louder than Concorde on take off, and you won’t be able to talk unless you shout very loudly. The place is more crowded than a London tube train in the rush hour. The lighting is so dark, it probably hides the beer stains.’

Jennie G: ‘If you like having ice cubes thrown at you by swearing 20-somethings, a man urinating in front of your children and smoking in a non smoking area, this is the place for you.’

Steve P: ‘Nice number of people in there, busy enough but not too packed, nice atmosphere, feels relaxing in there, clean toilets. This is definitely the best Wetherspoons in Paignton in all aspects – highly recommended.’

MartinGilyatt: ‘Service excellent, food great, prices great, and the food arrived before we’d barely had time to settle in and think about it. Highly recommend.’

It’s terrible…

Bobby T: ‘Third visit in 10 years hoping it would improve but no such luck. Thought they couldn’t go wrong with a simple cheese and tomato panini – how wrong I was! Bread was hard as iron and couldn’t find any cheese with the thin slice of tomato, so obviously a microwave job. Disgusting.’

Terance F: ‘Always visited this building site of a so called Wetherspoon public house to see if it has improved in any way. I’m never disappointed. Gets worse each time. Can’t beat going to the worst pub in the area. Not for the kind hearted or kids.’

Kellymb78: ‘Food was ok, but if I had visited the toilets first I wouldn’t have eaten there. Always judge a place by its toilets. If that’s what it looks like on display, what’s the kitchen like out of sight? Urge!’

Jannie1953: ‘This is an excellent Wetherspoons. Steak was tender and cooked just how I like it, staff are friendly and helpful. There are plenty of staff around who clean the tables and chat to the customers.’

Rossergruffydd: ‘We were very impressed by the quality and the size of this restaurant. It has a second floor bar as well with a large outside seating area. The decor was impressive and the local history links interesting and well researched as in the many photographs, prints and engravings on the walls. A great place for locals and visitors.’

Trev442: ‘The staff all appear uninterested in the customers and their needs. I use the place regularly but am now getting more than a little disappointed with what was an efficiently-run pub.’

DevonPaul: ‘The men’s toilet floor on both occasions has been literally swimming in urine. Disgusting.’

247chris54: ‘This pub has to be the worst I have ever been in. Asked for a cappuccino and was given latte. Questioned this and told that in this pub there is no difference apart for some froth on a cappuccino.’

It’s excellent…

GavinE964: ‘Always a good welcome, putting up with our late boozy nights, and the food was consistently good in the usual Wetherspoons way. Great beer, ale and gin selection at a good prices. What’s not to like?’

Rachel B: ‘All the staff are amazing and go the extra mile to do what they can. Great atmosphere and food is good quality and the fact you can buy one coffee tea etc and have as many refills –  win-win situation. Love it here.’

Sunshine20209: ‘Excellent value for money, always get a good meal here, fast friendly service, highly recommend this place to anyone. Five stars.’

It’s terrible…

AngelaDan2014: ‘When we entered it was very dark and dismal and noisy. The tables were all sticky and my son sat on a seat and the seat part fell off because it was loose. I will definitely not return or recommend.’

Ian20112: ‘Not very friendly bar staff, they seemed to be more interested in bickering among themselves than working out who was next to be served. Toilets were not clean at all.’

Keeleigh B: ‘The food was cold – the steak on the mixed grill was hardly cooked resulting in my plate being covered in blood and putting me off my dinner. As people who come to this Wetherspoons often, this will be our last visit for a long time. Disappointed is an understatement.’

It’s excellent…

148debbiec: ‘Lovely pub and lovely food, the staff very polite and helpful, would definitely visit this place when we come to visit again.’

Mickeyjohn: ‘Great location by the river, nice beer garden. Beer excellent. Great value.’

Mojopin123: ‘It feels like a proper pub as it was a former coaching inn, a lovely characterful old building with a glass-covered well in the bar. The beer is particularly good. The staff are also superior to any other we’ve been to, enthusiastic, polite and efficient.’

It’s terrible…

Sunshine11463043084: ‘The steak smelt like fish and the sausages were rock solid, the bacon was burnt. None of us are impressed with this visit. I’m surprised Gordon Ramsay hasn’t turned up to shut this place down.’

Paul S: ‘This place is nothing short of disgusting. It is dirty, run-down and threadbare. The toilets should be condemned.’

Debbiehill3: ‘Dirty seats, dirty cutlery, unhelpful staff, dry food, cold food, dirty glasses. Best part of the evening was walking out into fresh air.’
