Delays continue after railway bridge badly damaged in lorry crash

Trains are being delayed on a busy Devon railway line this morning as work continues to repair a bridge damaged in a crash with a lorry.

The bridge near Ivybridge on the Plymouth to Totnes line was hit by a lorry on Tuesday evening.

There are delays of up to 15 minutes as well as some service cancellations on Wednesday morning on GWR, CrossCountry and SWR routes.

CrossCountry are carrying passengers between Plymouth and Bristol Temple Meads – but not operating the other way, Stagecoach buses are accepting train tickets on any reasonable routes between Exeter, Ivybridge, Plymouth, Newton Abbot and between and South Western Railway are carrying passengers between Exeter and Waterloo – but not the other way.

Trains out of Plymouth have either been severely delayed or cancelled after the truck smashed into Fardell Bridge, between Zeth Hill Lane and Bridge Mill Lane in the Ivybridge area.

Roads around the area meanwhile have been heavily congested as the route was blocked in both directions.

A statement by National Rail read after the incident: “A lorry colliding with a bridge in the Ivybridge area is causing disruption between Plymouth and Totnes.

“Trains may be cancelled or delayed by up to 30 minutes.”

It’s not known at this time whether the lorry driver suffered any injuries.

Pictures and video from the scene show debris scattered everywhere after the lorry hit the bridge.

Police raced to the scene and carried out an investigation.

The road underneath remains shut whilst an assessment of the damage is carried out.

An online traffic bulletin by road management advisors Inrix read: “The closure is expected to remain in place for some time while structural inspections are carried out.”
